Vucic says Serbia’s parliament election to be held early
The unrest began in November 2024 after a roof collapse at a Novi Sad railway station killed 16 people, sparking accusations of government corruption and calls for Vucic’s resignation. The president and his supporters claim the protests are externally orchestrated attempts at a “color revolution,” involving Western, Croatian, and Albanian intelligence agencies.
Vucic stated that elections will take place “before the end of the term” of the current National Assembly, which expires in December 2027, though the exact date has yet to be set. He hinted that the vote could occur within a six-month timeframe.
Recent demonstrations marking the first anniversary of the Novi Sad tragedy saw clashes between Vucic supporters and opposition protesters in Belgrade, with bottles and firecrackers thrown and dozens detained. The government has offered concessions, including ministerial resignations and the release of documents related to the collapse.
In September, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service accused the EU of attempting a Ukraine-style “Maidan coup” in Serbia by influencing youth and fueling unrest through media channels.
