Kosovo, Albania Reject Thaci Verdict as France Supports Tribunal

(MENAFN) Kosovo and Albania have criticized the conviction of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, while France has reaffirmed its backing for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers following the court's decision to sentence him to 25 years in prison.

Kosovo Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca attended the proceedings in The Hague and described the ruling as “unfair” and “undeserved.” He said the decision was “sad” for Kosovo and its liberation war.

Konjufca also challenged the grounds of the indictment and raised concerns over the use of material originating from Serbia, according to reports.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama also commented on the ruling through Facebook, posting “Marre,” which means “shame,” alongside an image depicting Europe surrounded by barbed wire.

France, meanwhile, said it had taken note of the judgment and reiterated its support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, as well as its stated commitment to combating impunity.

The French Foreign Ministry emphasized that the verdict remains subject to appeal. It also said the ruling represents the completion of first-instance proceedings before the chambers, apart from cases involving offenses against the administration of justice.

France further reaffirmed its “constant support” for Kosovo's independence and institutions.

The court sentenced Thaci to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of crimes including murder, torture, cruel treatment and arbitrary detention committed during the 1998-99 Kosovo conflict.
